Townsend received his B.S. degree from the University of Michigan in 1958, M.S. from the University of Illinois in 1967, and Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin in 1971. Between 1958 and 1968, he worked for a number of companies, including General Electric, Sundstrand and Westinghouse. Following three years as a National Science Foundation Fellow, Dr. Townsend was on the faculty of Mechanical Engineering at University of Toronto until 1974, and Vanderbilt University until 1981, the latter with joint appointments in Biomedical Engineering and Department of Orthopedics. In 1981, he came to the University of Virginia and served as Department Chairman until 1991. He is currently the Alice M. and Guy A. Wilson Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. Dr. Townsend’s research interests are in dynamics, optimal control, optimization techniques, manufacturing systems, and applications of theory to dynamical systems. Dr. Townsend’s research has won numerous awards, including the American Society for Engineering Education Award for Outstanding Contribution in Research and Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. He is the author of over 100 articles, plus numbers of proceedings, presentations, addresses and reports.
