Dorning Whitney Stone Professor Telephone: (434) 982-5460 E-mail: jjd3r@virginia.edu Jack Dorning joined the University of Virginia in 1984 as Whitney Stone Professor of Nuclear Engineering and Professor of Engineering Physics and of Applied Mathematics. He earned his B.S. degree in Marine Engineering from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Nuclear Science and Engineering from Columbia University. Prior to coming to the University of Virginia he was Professor of Nuclear Engineering at the University of Illinois (1970-84), and Associate Physicist and Group Leader of Nuclear Reactor Analysis at Brookhaven National Laboratory (1967-1970). While his primary responsibilities are in the Department of Material Science, he also has a joint appointment in MAE. Dr. Dorning’s research spans several areas including: Fission Reactor Theory; Reactor Safety; Theoretical and Computational Charged and Neutral Particle Transport; Theoretical and Computational Fluid Dynamics; Theoretical and Computational Plasma Physics; and Bifurcation, Nonlinear Dynamics and Deterministic Chaos. Dr. Dorning has received the U.S. Department of Energy’s Ernest O. Lawrence Memorial Award, the nation’s highest award in nuclear technology. More information Publications |
