Jim McDaniel received his B.S. degree in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Virginia in 1971 and returned to join the faculty in 1983. In the intervening years he was an Air Force pilot and attended Stanford University, where he received an M.S. degree in Electrical Engineering and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Aeronautics and Astronautics and spent two years as a post-doctoral research fellow in Mechanical Engineering. He is presently a Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering.

Dr. McDaniel's research interests include fluid mechanics, combustion, laser-based flow field measurements and aircraft design. He is the Director of the Aerospace Research Laboratory, where basic research in high-speed fuel/air mixing and combustion is conducted using laser-induced fluorescence and other non-intrusive optical measurement techniques. These techniques are also being used to investigate the flow in a mechanical heart pump.
