Harsha K. Chelliah joined the University of Virginia in the Fall of 1992 and is currently an Associate Professor in Mechanical and Aerospace engineering. He received his B.Sc. degree (First-Class Honors) in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Moratuwa in Sri Lanka in January 1981, MS degree in Mechanical Engineering from SUNY at Stony Brook in August 1984, and Ph.D. degree in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering from Princeton University in January 1989. After completing his Ph.D., he continued his research work at Princeton University first as a Post-doctoral Research Associate (1989-1991) and then as a Research Staff Member (1991-1992).
Dr. Chelliah�s research interests are in the area of theoretical and experimental combustion, with the emphasis on understanding the basic interactions between fluid dynamics and finite-rate chemistry. He is currently supervising several highly diverse research projects: development of reduced reaction models for hydrocarbon-air systems in high-speed reacting flow applications; modeling of flame-acoustics interactions; oxidation and gasification of porous carbon particles (eg. coal char or biomass); combustion of syngas; fire suppression by condensed phase agents and search for alternatives; fuel droplet dispersion in DISC engines.
He is an active member of the Combustion Institute, the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. He is also a member of the technical committee on Propellants and Combustion of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics.
