George T. Gillies earned the B.Sc. in Physics from North Dakota State University in 1974 and the M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Engineering Physics from the University of Virginia in 1976 and 1980. He was a Physicist with the International Bureau of Weights and measures in Paris from 1981 through 1983, and then joined Martin Marietta Energy Systems in Oak Ridge, Tennessee as a Development Staff Member. He returned to the University of Virginia in 1985 as a Research Assistant Professor of Engineering Physics, and is presently Research Professor of Mechanical and Biomedical Engineering.



Dr. Gillies has research interests in instrumentation system development, the design of innovative medical devices, thermal metrology, rotating machinery, and gravitational physics. He served as Principal Investigator on the University's Magnetic Stereotaxis System project (the 'Video Tumor Fighter') from 1987 through 1991.



Dr. Gillies has served on the editorial boards of the REVIEW OF SCIENTIFIC INSTRUMENTS, REPORTS ON PROGESS IN PHYSICS, and GRAVITATION AND COSMOLOGY. He also holds an appointment as Clinical Professor of Neurosurgery at Virginia Commonwealth University. He serves as a referee for several major national and international journals in metrology, instrumentation design and biomedical devices.
