Gabriel Laufer Associate Professor Office: MEC 313 Telephone: (434) 982-5353 E-mail: glaufer@virginia.edu Gabriel Laufer received a B.Sc. degree from Technion in Aeronautical Engineering in 1970 and a Ph.D. degree in Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering from Princeton University in 1979. After graduation, Dr. Laufer was a member of the research staff at Western Electric Co. and concurrently a Visiting Research Fellow at Princeton University. There he developed sensitive surface analysis methods that allowed optical detection of absorbed single molecular layers. In 1980 Dr. Laufer joined the Faculty of the Department of Mechanical Engineering in Technion-Israel where he was the Director of the Industrial Laser Laboratory. While there he also collaborated with a local hospital in developing methods that can effectively reduce residual tissue damage induced by energetic surgical laser beams. This work earned him the Jolodan award for outstanding research in the field of biomechanical engineering. In 1986 he moved to Sunnyvale CA where he worked for Analatom, Inc., a small R&D firm. His work there resulted in the development of a system for non-intrusive oxygen temperature measurements in supersonic and hypersonic airflows. In 1989 he joined the University of Virginia. Dr. Laufer has more than 80 technical publications and a graduate level text book on the applications of lasers and optics to engineering, he is the recipient of the 1997 Rodman Best Teacher Award, he is an Associate Fellow of the AIAA and a former associate editor of the AIAA Journal His research interests include: Passive Remote Sensing of Chemical Effluents Development of a differential absorption radiometer (DAR) for passive remote sensing of effluent vapors in the long wave infrared (IR) (8-13.3 m). The sensor may be packaged as hand-held, unmanned-airborne or unattended sensor, or as imager of vapor clouds. It is intended for security applications as well as industrial and home safety uses. The sensor is being commercialized by Avir, LLC a startup company based in Charlottesville VA. The project is funded by the Center for Innovative Technology, private investors, and recently a SBIR award from the Office of Naval Research. More information Publications |
