Eric Maslen joined the University of Virginia in 1990 and is presently a Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. He earned his B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering from Cornell University and his Ph.D. in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering from the University of Virginia.

Prior to joining the University of Virginia he worked as a research and development engineer for the Koppers Company in their Container Machinery Division (1980-1985).

Dr. Maslen's research interests center on automatic controls as applied to machinery vibration control as well as automation. He has active research in magnetic bearings for support and control of turbomachinery. The primary emphasis of this work is on linear and non-linear control strategies for stability and vibration attenuation. Related research includes studies of the inverse magnetics problem as well as sensing and nonlinear signal processing.
