Earl A. Thornton Professor, P.E. Telephone: (434) 924-6291 E-mail: eat4x@virginia.edu Earl Thornton joined the department in 1989 and is a Professor of Aerospace Engineering. He earned a B.S. and Ph.D. in Engineering Mechanics from Virginia Tech and a M.S. in Theoretical and Applied Mechanics from the University of Illinois. Prior to coming to UVA he was a visiting scholar at the University of Texas at Austin (1987-1988) and a faculty member at Old Dominion University (1969-1986). Dr. Thornton’s research interests span computational methods and thermal structures. He is director of the UVA Thermal Structures Laboratory. Current research includes analytical and experimental studies of aerospace structures at elevated temperatures. He is a co-author of the text The Finite Element Method for Engineers (Third Edition) and is the author of the AIAA book Thermal Structures for Aerospace Applications. Dr. Thornton is an Associate Editor of the Journal of Spacecraft and Rockets and is Fellow of the AIAA. More information Publications |
