Senior Scientist Job Description

The Rotating Machinery and Controls (ROMAC) Laboratory, of the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at the University of Virginia has an opening for a Research Scientist.  ROMAC is an industrial research consortium doing research in a broad range of areas of applications in turbomachinery.  The individual will report directly to the Lab Director and will work with a multi-disciplinary team of faculty, graduate students, and research professionals.

A Ph.D. in mechanical engineering or closely related field with strong background and experience in turbomachinery is required.  Knowledge and experience in specific subjects such as rotor dynamics, bearings, seals, computational modeling and experimental methods in rotating machinery is required.  Formal teaching experience is highly desirable, as the position will involve directing student research activities.  Duties include developing new computational methods, using licensed commercial software, and project management.  The successful candidate will be interacting with faculty, students, other research professionals, and representatives from the ROMAC member companies.  The successful candidate will also be expected to attend professional meetings, to give presentations, to write journal articles, and to develop and write proposals.  Funding guaranteed for one year, with potential for long-term follow-on funding.

The Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at the University of Virginia seeks to hire a non-tenure track assistant professor who can lead and advance an established undergraduate mechatronics and rapid prototyping activity.  This position offers the opportunity for long-term career building through multi-year contracts with performance-based reappointment, and promotion within the non-tenured professorial ranks with expectation of continued employment.  Of particular interest are candidates with experience in teaching courses in mechatronics.  The successful candidate will have demonstrated a strong commitment to excellence in undergraduate teaching and innovation.

Duties and Responsibilities

Duties include teaching undergraduate engineering courses and labs, coordinating undergraduate engineering design projects and related contributions to undergraduate engineering programs, mentoring and advising undergraduate students, contributions to the scholarship of teaching or other field of expertise, and service to the department, school and university.  The successful candidate may teach courses throughout the mechanical and aerospace engineering curricula.

Qualifications

Candidates for the position must have a Doctoral degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering or a closely related field, and documented success in teaching in an undergraduate engineering program.  Other desired qualifications are demonstrated ability for pedagogical innovation, including the incorporation of new technologies, and skills and interest in pedagogical collaborations within the school and across the University.

The appointment start date is negotiable but not later than August 25, 2013.
